nine arch bridge

Ella is a popular destination in Sri Lanka and a part of almost every itinarary. This small mountain village is bursting with visitors, yet it still manages to keep its charming character. Backpackers love it here, but it’s also a great spot if you’re traveling with kids. Here are some fun activities to do in Ella, no mather what your travel budget is!

Train ride over the Nine Arch Bridge

The train ride is probably one of the most popular in the world. And I have to admit, it was a fantastic experience—the landscapes were stunning, and the atmosphere on the train is nothing like what you’re used to if you’re coming from Europe. We boarded the train one station before Ella and got off one station after the Nine Arch Bridge. This way, we experienced the most spectacular part of the journey. The train even makes a short stop on the bridge. The stop is long enough to step off and walk to the perfect spot for that iconic photo!

Not really into the train ride but still want to see the bridge? No problem! It’s just a short walk from Ella to the Nine Arch Bridge. You can also take a tuk-tuk, but make sure to agree on the price beforehand. This is a popular tourist activity, so prices can quickly go up!

Getting tickets for this train ride isn’t easy. You can try purchasing them directly at the station, but another option is to book through online platforms. This way, you’ll have reserved seats and won’t have to sit on the floor or stand for the entire journey.

Tea tasting

Sri Lanka is the birthplace of tea. Want to learn the real difference between black, green, and white tea? And is matcha tea really that special? You’ll discover all this and more during a tea tasting. We visited Ella Organic Tea Garden, a small and charming family-run business just outside Ella’s center. In two hours, you’ll learn everything about tea and the other crops grown in the family’s organic garden. We tasted plenty of tea and coffee, and you even get to take home fresh tea straight from the plantation. There are also some unique specialties for sale, allowing you to support a small local business!

Hiking trail Ella Rock

There’s no shortage of hiking trails around Ella! Thanks to the higher altitude, the climate here is much cooler than in the rest of Sri Lanka. That makes it perfect for hiking. The official starting point of the trail is Kithaella Train Station. But you can also start walking along the tracks from Ella Train Station. There are multiple routes and shortcuts. So using Google Maps or a hiking app will make navigation easier and ensure you reach the viewpoint without any trouble!

Hiking trail Little Adam’s peak

Another great hike near Ella is the one to Little Adam’s Peak. Take a tuk-tuk to the start of the trail, from where it’s about a 45-minute walk to the top. Alternatively, you can take a tuk-tuk to the Ravana Pool Club and start your hike from there—the trail begins to the left of the club. From this point, it’s only a short 30-minute climb to the summit. It’s an easy and accessible hike with rewarding views!

Ziplining

At the start of the hike to Little Adam’s Peak, you’ll come across this adventure park. Just past the Ravana Pool Club, you’ll find a swing. The pool club is also a great spot to grab a cocktail or take a refreshing dip. You can easily slip past the entrance for free—just be a little creative! A few hundred meters past the swing, you’ll see the zipline. On the other side of the hill, there’s also a high ropes course. If you’re into adventure activities, you definitely won’t get bored here!

Mahamevnawa Buddhist Monastery

This Buddhist monastery was my absolute favorite spot in Ella. Perched atop one of the surrounding mountains, it offers breathtaking views. Getting there is an adventure in itself—just hop in a tuk-tuk from the town center and enjoy the ride. We joined a meditation session with the monks, which was designed for tourists but felt incredibly serene. The peaceful atmosphere and stunning surroundings made it a truly special experience. You can also participate in retreats here. Everything is free and based on voluntary donations.

Waterfalls: Ravana Falls and Diyaluma falls

Diyaluma is about an hour’s drive from Ella, followed by a short hike. This stunning waterfall offers a unique experience—you can swim in the natural pools at the top! It’s the perfect spot to cool off on a hot day and enjoy breathtaking views.

The Ravana Falls is a great stop along the way to Wellawaya. This picturesque waterfall is easily accessible and a nice spot to take a break, enjoy the scenery, and even dip your feet in the refreshing water.
