How to spend three citytrip days in Stockholm?

Stockholm, capital of Sweden, green, relax, art, food. That’s the description of Stockholm in a few words. It has the same relax atmosphere as other Scandinavian capitals, Copenhagen for example. When you know the city is located on 14 islands connected by 57 bridges, it’s easy to understand that discovering the city by boat is a good idea. The heart of the city is so charming. The relaxing atmosphere and a great variety of must-see attractions make this place perfect. Enjoy the good food, which makes it an ideal destination for a city trip! How to spend three citytrip days in Stockholm? Here are some suggestions, some highlights we loved! With a city card you can save some money on the museums and other attractions!

A citytrip Stockholm: how do you get here and where to stay?

Stockholm is one of the cheapest destinations to fly to from Brussels, making it an ideal choice for a city trip! If you fly with Brussels Airlines, you’ll arrive at Bromma Airport. From there, you can take a tram to the city center, which connects with the metro lines. If you choose another airline, you’ll likely arrive at Arlanda Airport. This is Stockholm’s largest airport and is located a bit further from the city center than Bromma. However, getting to the center from Arlanda is also easy using public transport. You can take the Arlanda Express train, which brings you to Stockholm Central Station in just under 20 minutes. From there, you can hop on the metro. Search for cheap flights here.

We opted for a hotel near the central station. It’s easy to reach from the airport. Staying there keeps you close to the vibrant heart of the city. During a citytrip the time you have to visit a city is limited, so this helps us to save some time! We found a good promotion at the Scandic Grand Central. But there are many good hotels in the Stockholm area, search for the best offer here.

Start your citytrip with a visit to the Vasa Museum

I don’t think you will find so many museums in such a small area in many cities! Something for everyone here! Not to be missed are VASA museum, Nobel museum, photography museum and the modern art museum. Each with their own unique character, but they have the wow factor in common! And … no trip to Stockholm is complete without a visit to the ABBA Museum. This interactive museum is dedicated to the iconic Swedish pop group. It features exhibits on their music, costumes, and personal lives. Visitors can even sing and dance along with ABBA’s greatest hits in the museum’s karaoke room. We absolutely loved this one!!

Tickets Vasa Museum:

  • Adults: 220 SEK
Children and youth up to 18: Free admission

Subway art

Stockholm is a sprawling city, but the city center is quite compact and easy to explore on foot. However, during a city trip to Stockholm, you should definitely take the metro at least once. And there’s a good reason for that.

The Stockholm subway is often considered the world’s largest art gallery. Since 1957, each new subway station has been designed by a different artist, making almost all of the 100 stations unique works of art. T-Centralen, the nexus of Stockholm’s subway system was the first station to feature artwork.

With a single ticket, which allows you to travel for an hour and a half, you can explore this entire underground gallery. Our favorite stations? T-Centralen, Kungsträdgården, and Solna Centrum.

Different neighbourhoods

Gamla Stan, the historical heart of the city. Cute streats, stunning buildings, the Royal Palace, nice art shops.

Norrmalm, the business center of the city. All the big stores, a lot of hotels and more restaurants than you can count are situated here.

Djurgården and Skeppskholmen, the green part of the city, here you’ll find some peace and quiet, but also interesting museums like the VASA museum, the ABBA museum and Nordiska museum.

Östermalm, the fancy part!

Södermalm, the cozy part with small houses, vintage shops, good restaurants and Fotografiska, a museum about photography.

Stockholm Boot tours

Lots of islands means also lots of boats! Boats are a part of the public transportation system of the city. There are also many boat tours that you can do here. Compare prices between the different companies and choose a tour that suits you, you won’t regret it!

The Royal Palace

This is one of the largest palaces in Europe. It is the official residence of His Majesty the King of Sweden. The palace has over 600 rooms.

The Palace has five museums. Be careful with your precious time in Stockholm. You can easily spend a whole day here, so select a few of the highlights. The Palace was largely built during the eighteenth century in the Italian Baroque style. It has a bit of a Rome vibe. You can also see Gustav III’s Museum of Antiquities, the Tre Kronor Museum, and the Treasury.

The Royal Palace also contains the Armory, with royal costumes and armor. Make sure not to miss the parade of soldiers and the daily changing of the guard!

Tickets Royal Palace:

  • Adults: 230 SEK
    Student: 210 SEK
    Child (age 7-17): 115 SEK

Stockholm, heaven for foodies!

‘Coffee and fika’, a tradition of the Swedes. Make sure that you have some time to enjoy a ‘fika’ moment on your citytrip in Stockholm. You can get free coffee in many places and you buy a cake or some pastry with it. Delicious!! Actually, these are often bakeries with a restaurant. It’s super cozy and you often see the locals here enjoying a work break! Everybody is so relaxed here, and maybe this is the reason why!
