How to spend three citytrip days in Stockholm?

Stockholm, capital of Sweden, green, relax, art, food. That’s the description of Stockholm in a few words. It has the same relax atmosphere as other Scandinavian capitals, Copenhagen for example. When you know the city is located on 14 islands connected by 57 bridges, it’s easy to understand that discovering the city by boat is a good idea. The heart of the city is so charming. The relaxing atmosphere and a great variety of must-see attractions make this place perfect. Enjoy the good food, which makes it an ideal destination for a city trip! How to spend three citytrip days in Stockholm? Here are some suggestions, some highlights we loved! With a city card you can save some money on the museums and other attractions!

A citytrip Stockholm: how do you get here and where to stay?

Stockholm is one of the cheapest destinations to fly to from Brussels, making it an ideal choice for a city trip! If you fly with Brussels Airlines, you’ll arrive at Bromma Airport. From there, you can take a tram to the city center, which connects with the metro lines. If you choose another airline, you’ll likely arrive at Arlanda Airport. This is Stockholm’s largest airport and is located a bit further from the city center than Bromma. However, getting to the center from Arlanda is also easy using public transport. You can take the Arlanda Express train, which brings you to Stockholm Central Station in just under 20 minutes. From there, you can hop on the metro. Search for cheap flights here.

We opted for a hotel near the central station. It’s easy to reach from the airport. Staying there keeps you close to the vibrant heart of the city. During a citytrip the time you have to visit a city is limited, so this helps us to save some time! We found a good promotion at the Scandic Grand Central. A hotel with a theatre in it. It was a fun experience to have breakfast here! But there are many good hotels in the Stockholm area, search for the best offer here.

Our Favorite Things to See and Do in Stockholm

Different neighbourhoods

Stockholm is made up of several distinct neighborhoods, each with its own charm and vibe. Exploring them is like peeling back the layers of the city’s personality, every area has something different to offer.

Gamla Stan is the historical heart of the city and feels like stepping into a storybook. With its narrow cobbled streets, colorful facades, and medieval architecture, it’s one of the best-preserved old towns in Europe. Although we also liked the old towns of Bergen and Prague too! Don’t miss the Royal Palace, the charming little art shops, and the cozy cafés tucked away in hidden corners.

Norrmalm is the city’s commercial and business center. Here you’ll find all the big name stores, countless restaurants, and a variety of hotels. It’s a busy, modern part of Stockholm with excellent public transport connections and access to cultural hotspots like the opera and concert hall.

Djurgården and Skeppsholmen are the city’s green oases. These islands are perfect for a peaceful walk or a picnic, but they also house some of Stockholm’s top museums. In this part of the city you’ll find the majestic VASA Museum (home to a 17th-century ship), the fun and colorful ABBA Museum and the cultural treasure trove of Nordiska Museet.

Östermalm is where Stockholm turns on the glam. This upscale district is known for its elegant architecture, exclusive boutiques, and stylish bars and restaurants. It’s also home to the Östermalms Saluhall, a historic food market that’s a paradise foodies.

Södermalm, often just called “Söder” by locals, is the hip and cozy part of town. Think vintage stores, independent design boutiques, great coffee shops, and trendy restaurants. It’s also where you’ll find Fotografiska, a world-class photography museum housed in a stunning old industrial building by the water.

Start your citytrip with a visit to the Vasa Museum

I don’t think you will find so many museums in such a small area in many cities! Something for everyone here! Not to be missed are VASA museum, Nobel museum, photography museum and the modern art museum. Each with their own unique character, but they have the wow factor in common! And … no trip to Stockholm is complete without a visit to the ABBA Museum. This interactive museum is dedicated to the iconic Swedish pop group. It features exhibits on their music, costumes, and personal lives. Visitors can even sing and dance along with ABBA’s greatest hits in the museum’s karaoke room. We absolutely loved this one!! This museum is popular, so it takes a while to get in. Get your fast-track ticket voor the ABBA museum here to save yourself some time!

Subway art

Stockholm is a sprawling city, but the city center is quite compact and easy to explore on foot. However, during a city trip to Stockholm, you should definitely take the metro at least once. And there’s a good reason for that.

The Stockholm subway is often considered the world’s largest art gallery. Since 1957, each new subway station has been designed by a different artist, making almost all of the 100 stations unique works of art. T-Centralen, the nexus of Stockholm’s subway system was the first station to feature artwork.

With a single ticket, which allows you to travel for an hour and a half, you can explore this entire underground gallery. Our favorite stations? T-Centralen, Kungsträdgården, and Solna Centrum.

Stockholm Boot tours

Lots of islands means also lots of boats! Boats are a part of the public transportation system of the city. There are also many boat tours that you can do here. Compare prices between the different companies and choose a tour that suits you, you won’t regret it!

The Royal Palace

This is one of the largest palaces in Europe. It is the official residence of His Majesty the King of Sweden. The palace has over 600 rooms.

The Palace has five museums. Be careful with your precious time in Stockholm. You can easily spend a whole day here, so select a few of the highlights. The Palace was largely built during the eighteenth century in the Italian Baroque style. It has a bit of a Rome vibe. You can also see Gustav III’s Museum of Antiquities, the Tre Kronor Museum, and the Treasury.

The Royal Palace also contains the Armory, with royal costumes and armor. Make sure not to miss the parade of soldiers and the daily changing of the guard!

Stockholm, heaven for foodies!

‘Coffee and fika’, a tradition of the Swedes. Make sure that you have some time to enjoy a ‘fika’ moment on your citytrip in Stockholm. You can get free coffee in many places and you buy a cake or some pastry with it. Delicious!! Actually, these are often bakeries with a restaurant. It’s super cozy and you often see the locals here enjoying a work break! Everybody is so relaxed here, and maybe this is the reason why!
