The south of Belgium, a hiking paradise

A day of hiking in the Hautes Fagnes – fresh air, wide-open nature, and a good chance of snow in winter … sounds perfect, right? But you’re not the only one who thinks so. On snowy weekends, half of Belgium seems to head to this small region to enjoy the winter scenery. Luckily, there are still quiet corners where you can escape the crowds. One of them lies in the tiny village of Walk, on the edge of the Hautes Fagnes.

A 6-Kilometer Trail off the beaten path

From the center of Walk, a beautiful 6 km hiking trail starts right at a small parking area. The route is easy and family-friendly. This is perfect for a relaxing day outdoors. Dogs are welcome, and if it has snowed, bring a sledge for the kids, they’ll love it!

The trail is clearly marked, so getting lost is nearly impossible (and that says something coming from us, we could get lost in our own garden 😉).

Changing Landscapes and Serene Silence

The first part of the hike takes you through open fields and meadows, with wide views of the surrounding hills. In winter, the landscape often wears a soft white blanket and a morning mist adds a magical touch. Toward the end, the trail leads you into the forest, where the air feels even crisper and the silence is almost complete.

On our way, we spotted deer and birds of prey, a wonderful reminder of how wild and unspoiled this region still is.
